Our bowlers did a wonderful job in taking the game to the last over: Hayley Matthews

By Mumbai Indians

The annoying law of averages hit us! After a dream run in the last five games, we suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the sixth game on Saturday (March 18) as we went down by five wickets to the UP Warriorz, who came out all guns blazing. Defending a modest 127, we fought hard till the end, taking the match to the very last over of the game. Our bowlers bowled their hearts out and saved every run as precious as gold. As they say, catches win matches, and to our horror, we dropped three sitters to find ourselves in soup. However, not to forget, there were a couple of blinders by our skip Kaur and Yastika Bhatia.

In a post-match presser, Hayley Matthews, who scored 35 off 30 and picked 1/26 addressed the media on behalf of our team. Despite losing the game, Hayley was not disappointed with the team's performance. She said, "Our bowlers did a wonderful job in defending 127 and taking the game to the last over. Harman backed all the bowlers. I think we bowled well, and it is just that we didn't have enough runs on the board."

"We knew at the start that it was not a 170 or a 180 wicket. Again, I feel our bowlers did a great job today defending a relatively low target."

While we have had some fantastic batting performances in the WPL, today was not our day.

"Our batting has clicked so far in the tournament. Today, we had Issy playing that fantastic innings in the back end. Batting isn't a problem. Sometimes in cricket, things go your way, and sometimes, they don't. So, I won't say there is any error in batting or batting lineup," she said.

"I think games like these are good learnings. We have many youngsters in the team, and such a game gives you a good learning experience. We would have loved to get over the line, but I feel such experiences are helpful."

We have got off to a flying start, and there is a lot of positivity around. There is nothing to worry about. This is not a setback by any means. Our team spirit is just as intact. Hayley agreed.

"Environment in the team is great. We get along with each other well. When it comes down to Mumbai Indians, it feels like one family. We clicked from the right from the first game. Harman is calm, cool, and collected. She doesn't panic even in pressure situations. She takes advice from all players and is a fantastic leader."
