Bumrah Ready For Test Cricket - Ponting

By Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians head coach Ricky Ponting showered praises on the young Indian pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, who has been making sure he is being noticed for the right reasons. The youngster who made his international debut down under did well against Australia and continued his match winning performances in the ICC World Twenty20. “Over the last three months, starting with the Australia tour and then the World T20, he has been a stand-out performer and he has been a stand out bowler in IPL as well,” said Ricky Ponting.

The former Australian captain felt that Bumrah was even ready for the longer format of the game. “If you look at the skills Bumrah has and the way he has come through the last two years then he is ready to play Test cricket. He’s got an unusual action, good pace and with the brand new ball he can get some good movement in the air,” He added, “If India is looking for someone to come in and play Test cricket then I am sure Bumrah’s name will be in the selectors’ mind.”

Even before the season began Ponting was excited to coach Bumrah. “Bumrah is stronger now and we are finally seeing him bowl the way we always knew he can,” said an optimistic Ricky Ponting before the start of IPL 2016.

Bumrah only proved his coach right as he has been in terrific form throughout the tournament. He has picked up 14 wickets and has bowled beautifully in the death overs. The mixture of bouncers, yorkers and slower deliveries has worked brilliantly for him and the team. He is the leading T20 wicket-taker in India in 2016 with 47 wickets in 38 matches. Also, while picking up the crucial wickets he has maintained his economy rate below 7, 6.86 to be precise which is pretty impressive by T20 standards. He has been a great asset not just for MI but also for the Indian team.
