After completing a 3-0 clean sweep in the ODI series, the Indian cricket team will look to continue their dominance over hosts West Indies in the five-match T20I series starting on Friday, July 29.
India’s white-ball captain Rohit Sharma, wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant and all-rounder Hardik Pandya have joined the T20I squad after being rested in the three-match ODI series due to workload management.
Star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav have also returned to the T20I set-up ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to be played in Australia in October-November.
Other T20I squad members including Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Dinesh Karthik and Harshal Patel have arrived in Trinidad and Tobago ahead of the T20I series.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal have been rested for the five-match T20I series.
On the other hand, Nicholas Pooran-led West Indies will look to bounce back in the T20I format, which is best suited for their style of play.
While West Indies have recently struggled in the ODI format, the Caribbean outfit secured a 2-0 T20I series win over Bangladesh in July.
A lot will depend on captain Nicholas Pooran, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Rovman Powell and Romario Shepherd for the West Indies to clinch the T20I series against a formidable Indian side.
West Indies vs India T20I head-to-head record
India have a dominant head-to-head record against West Indies in the T20I format, winning 13 of the 20 matches that they have played so far. Windies have secured just six victories while one match ended in no result.
Furthermore, India are currently on a four-match unbeaten streak against West Indies in the shortest format.
Players to watch out
In the absence of Virat Kohli, Deepak Hooda could bat at number three for India in the five T20Is. The 27-year-old has been impressive in his short T20I career so far, amassing 205 runs in six matches at an average of 68.33 and a strike rate of 172.26. The swashbuckling batter recently smashed his maiden T20I ton against hosts Ireland and will look to continue his form in the Caribbean and the United States.
For the West Indies, Romario Shepherd will be the player to watch out for. The Guyana-born all-rounder recently finished as the highest wicket-taker against Bangladesh in the three-match T20I series. The right-arm pacer picked six wickets in three matches at an average of 11.33.
The first T20I of the five-match series will be played at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad while the next two T20Is are scheduled to take place at Warner Park in St Kitts.
Both India and West Indies will later travel to the United States to play the final two games at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium in Florida. Matches will start at 8:00 PM IST.
