Stats indicate our key performers in IPL 2019 thus far
With four games to play between now and the end of the league stage, it’s safe to say that Mumbai Indians look well-placed to make the playoffs of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019. The three-time champions have won six of their 10 matches so far and can put one foot in the playoffs with another victory over Chennai Super Kings on Friday.
While everyone has played a part in our success this season, Quinton de Kock stands out as our leading run-getter in IPL 2019 so far. The South African wicketkeeper has scored 378 runs at an average of 37.8 and a strike rate of 137.45. He’s struck more fours (35) than any other MI player, while also being third on our chart for the most sixes (15) hit thus far. His understanding with skipper and opening partner Rohit Sharma has flourished as well. With a run rate of 8.45 in the powerplay, MI boast the second highest run rate in the first six overs.
Our leading six-hitters in this campaign are, of course, Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya. Pollard has cleared the boundary ropes on 18 occasions, while Hardik has deposited the ball into the crowd 17 times. Pollard, in fact, holds the record for most sixes in an innings by any player from any team in the competition this year. He match-winning knock of 83 – the third fastest fifty of IPL 2019 – as stand-in captain against Kings XI Punjab saw the towering Trinidadian smash 10 sixes.
Pollard and Hardik also make an appearance on the charts for leading strike rates for batsmen, who’ve scored a minimum of 100 runs in IPL 2019. Hardik is ranked second on this list having scored 241 from 127 balls at a strike rate of 189.76. Pollard, meanwhile, is in third place having made 195 runs from 111 deliveries at a strike rate of 175.67.
On the bowling front, it’s been a season of revelations. Earlier in the campaign, Rasikh Salam became just the second bowler from Jammu & Kashmir to play in the IPL and also our youngest ever debutant. Young Antiguan pacer Alzarri Joseph then took the IPL by storm with a stunning debut that saw him register the best bowling figures in league history. He finished with figures of 6 for 12 and even bowled a maiden. At 22 years and 137 days of age, Joseph became the second-youngest bowler to claim a five-fer in the IPL.
Another revelation this year has come in the form of Rahul Chahar, who has been spinning webs around and flustering opposition batsmen. The 19-year-old leg break bowler is second only to Jasprit Bumrah in our wicket-taking charts. Chahar has taken nine wickets in seven games at an average of 19.11 and an economy of 6.61 to establish himself as our first-choice spinner.
However, pace ace Bumrah remains our go-to man in crunch situations. He’s our leading wicket-taker with 11 scalps at an average of 22.54 and an economy of 6.41. His economy rate happens to be the best in the league for bowlers that have bowled a minimum of 10 overs in the competition. Bumrah has also bowled the fastest delivery by an MI player this year, clocking in at 150.41 km/h.
