WIvIND 3rd ODI report: Free-scoring Ishan stars in India’s 200-run win in series decider
The action-packed finale to the WIvIND ODI series had a thrilling climax: India won by 200 runs. In short, DUNIYA HILA DIYA.
Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson and skipper Hardik Pandya donned the roles of assassins as they tanked half-centuries, respectively, to set up a gigantic score of 351/5.
When it came to the bowling, Shardul Thakur and Mukesh Kumar left no breathing space for the Windies batters as they combined to take seven wickets and cut short the hosts’ run chase to 151 in 35.3 overs.
Here’s a short recap of a clinical, dominant, ruthless and comprehensive victory.
No stopping to I-shaandaar Express
Pounding every blade of the grass on the pitch in Trinidad, our pocket dynamo notched his fourth straight fifty on the tour. Striking at 120.31, Ishan forged a match-defining 143-run partnership alongside Shubman Gill (85) to give India a solid headstart to the series decider. In the end, he deservedly was adjudged the Player of the Series.
Samson and Hardik make merry off Windies bowlers
Taking over from Ishan and Gill, Sanju Samson (51) and Hardik Pandya (70 not out) didn’t let the hosts’ bowlers have a period of rest. Pandya, in particular, carried India past 350 with 42 runs off the last 19 balls - including two sixes and a boundary four off Romario Shepherd in the final over of the first innings.
WI’s wobbling start to run chase
Chasing 352, West Indies hoped for a confident start on a batting-friendly surface. However, Mukesh Kumar said NO. The pacer ripped through the WI top-order and got rid of Brandon King (0), Kyle Myers (4) and Shai Hope (5).
Comeback wicket for Unadkat
Almost a decade after his last ODI scalp, Jaydev Unadkat returned triumphantly to the limited overs format with the dismissal of Keacy Carty. He took just five balls to get his man, with the delivery taking an outside edge off Carty and straight to Shubman Gill at slip.
Shardul, Kuldeep bring down the shutters
In just 6.3 overs, Shardul Thakur rubberstamped his dominance with the ball, grabbing four wickets for just 37 runs. Spinner Kuldeep chipped in with his variations to derail Windies’ attempts at tinkling with the lower order to inch closer to the target.
This victory means India have now won the last 13 ODI bilaterals against West Indies since 2006. Now, onto the 20 overs format. A day’s break and we will be back doing what we do best - play to win!
Brief scores: India 351/5 (Shubman Gill 85, Ishan Kishan 77, Hardik Pandya 70*, Sanju Samson 51; Romario Shepherd 2/73) beat West Indies 151 (Gudakesh Motie 38*; Shardul Thakur 4-37, Mukesh Kumar 3/30) by 200 runs.
