Rain spoils the party but Rohit and Co. win Test series 1-0

By Mumbai Indians

The storyline was set: India clinch the WIvIND Test series 2-0, until a strong cameo by the weather gods on Day 5 enforced a washout and a draw in the Port of Spain Test.

The Windies went into the final day needing 289 runs to level the series after India’s authoritative performance with the bat and ball earlier on. Alas, the rain showers would become relentless, and both sides would split the honours at the Queen’s Park Oval.

If anything, the weather poured down cold water on the efforts of a strong India batting - where five batters, including a special Virat Kohli 100, hammered 50-plus scores to register a game-deciding first innings total of 438.

On the bowling front, Mohammed Siraj did the talking with the ball in the first innings with 5/60 while Ravichandran Ashwin extended his WI supremacy with two wickets in the second innings before rain brought down the curtains to the fixture.

Here’s a short recap.

Mukesh Kumar, India’s latest Test bowling weapon

Ravichandran Ashwin hands Test Cap #308 to Mukesh Kumar. The Bihar-born Bengal pacer was rewarded for his efforts in the domestic circuit over the years and came in as a replacement for Shardul Thakur.

Rohit-Jaiswal pair continue free-scoring at the top

Carrying the momentum from the first Test, the new-found Test pairing of Rohit Sharma (80) and Yashaswi Jaiswal (57) continued toying with the Windies bowlers with their respective half-tons. The duo would take their partnership aggregate in the series closer to the 400-run mark.

All hail King Kohli!

500 international matches, a multitude of records but just one Virat Kohli. The talismanic cricketer celebrated his landmark appearance with a century, becoming the first to notch a 100 on his 500th appearance and one shy of breaking Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 13 international centuries against the Windies.

Jaddu-Ash’s all-round consistency continues

Scoring fifties and taking wickets is something of an easy task now for the seasoned pairing of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. The pair slammed individual half-tons to help India to a decisive 438 in the first innings before fetching some Windies scalps.

An Ishaan-daar display

After notching three caught dismissals in Windies’ first innings, our pocket dynamo made sure he would leave a mark in his first Test series. Promoted to bat ahead of Virat Kohli, Ishan took a cue from Rohit’s 57 and hit a 32-ball 54 in the second innings. And, he reached it in style - a one-handed six.

Ashwin and the raindance

Ravichandran Ashwin (75) went one past Anil Kumble (74) to become the second-highest wicket-taker for India vs West Indies with his 2/33 in the second innings.

Instead of a series washout, there was a washout of a Day's play as persistent rain robbed us of an opportunity to beat the Windies on Day 5 of the second Test.

This meant both teams would walk away with four points each, while India would additionally claim the series trophy.

What's next? Two days of recovery and training before the series shifts to white-ball cricket.

Brief Scores: India - 438 (Virat Kohli 121, Rohit Sharma 80, Jomel Warrican 3/89) and 181/2 dec (Rohit Sharma 57, Ishan Kishan 52*) drew with West Indies - 255 (Carlos Brathwaite 75, Mohammed Siraj 5/60) and 76 for 2 (Ravichandran Ashwin 2/33).
