WPL weekly star-tracker (Jun 17): Vastrakar, Hayley put up wholesome all-round show

By Mumbai Indians

Pooja’s back doing what Pooja does

Vital 31 runs at number eight, playing the perfect fiddle to the centurion, Smriti Mandhana, and then batting brilliantly with the tail to bat until the end of the innings to lift India to 265/8 in their 50 overs. As if that wasn’t enough, she opened the bowling, got rid of Anneke Bosch with a ripper of an LBW, and helped skittle the South Africans for a mere 122.

Matthews and solid opening starts

A steady 53-ball 38 with six boundaries in it, and skipper Hayley Matthews was her usual self at the top of the West Indian batting order, laying the platform for the long haul. She fell before she could capitalise though, uncharacteristically. Don’t worry Paltan, this is just the start. She’s just warming up to the Lankan conditions.

Harman’s expert troop marshalling

She might’ve endured a rare failure with the bat (10 off 11 balls), but on the field, our Kaptaan Kaur was a class act. Ringing in the bowling changes with precision to derail the South African innings right from the start and making sure the pressure was never off, she made the 1-0 look easy.
