The Indian cricket team thrashed hosts West Indies by 119 runs (D/L method) in the rain-curtailed third and final One-Day International (ODI) to complete a 3-0 whitewash at the Queen’s Park Oval in the Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago in the early hours of Thursday, July 28.
India rode on impressive fifties from openers Shikhar Dhawan (58) and Shubman Gill (98 not out) while a quickfire 44 from Shreyas Iyer helped the visitors reach 225/3 in 36 overs. The visitors’ innings ended prematurely as rain played spoilsport throughout the game after a two-and-half-hour delay had earlier reduced the match to 40 overs.
West Indies were set a DLS-revised target of 257 in 35 overs to avoid series whitewash.
In reply, West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals as the hosts were bowled out for 137 in 26 overs.
Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was the wrecker-in-chief for India as he picked four wickets for just 17 runs in the four overs that he bowled. Pacers Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur bagged two wickets each.
For West Indies, captain Nicholas Pooran and Brandon King were the top scorers as they both scored 42 each.
Earlier in the day, India captain Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and opted to bat first. Dhawan and Gill got the visitors off to a great start as they forged a 113-run stand for the opening wicket.
With West Indies in desperate need of a wicket, leg-break bowler Hayden Walsh provided them the much-needed breakthrough as he removed Dhawan for 58.
Shreyas Iyer joined Gill at the crease as the duo continued to pile more pressure on the West Indies.
Iyer scored a blitzkrieg 34-ball 44 before he was dismissed by West Indies left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein.
Swashbuckling middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav failed to get going as he was picked by Walsh for just eight runs.
Meanwhile, intermittent showers cut short the Indian innings after the 36th over as Gill missed his maiden ODI ton.
Defending 257 in 35 overs, Mohammed Siraj claimed two wickets in the second over of the run-chase to put West Indies on the backfoot.
From thereon, the Caribbean outfit struggled to show any resistance as they suffered their first ODI series whitewash against India on home soil.
Shubman Gill was adjudged the Player of the Match and the Player of the Series after helping India complete a clean sweep. The Indian opening batter amassed 205 runs in three ODIs at a staggering average of 102.50.
After the ODI series, India will lock horns with West Indies in the first of the five-match T20I series at Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago on Friday, July 29. The match will start at 8 PM IST.
