A fifty-run stand between Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan and some late hitting from Tim David did not prove to be enough as we fell short by just three runs in a thrilling encounter against SRH at the Wankhede stadium.
Skipper Rohit won the toss and chose to field first, with Sanjay Yadav making his MI and Tata IPL debut while Mayank Markande also made the starting XI - in place of Hrithik Shokeen and Kumar Kartikeya Singh.
Dan Sams and Riley Meredith began well with the new ball, getting some early movement in the air and beating SRH’s openers Abhishek Sharma and Priyam Garg. Sams soon got rid of the in-form Abhishek.
New man Rahul Tripathi and Garg then went on the attack, taking advantage of the powerplay and then used the momentum to build a solid 78-run stand in seven overs, with Sanjay, Boom and Mayank all trying their best.

It was then that Ro got Ramandeep Singh into the attack and he struck immediately, taking a wonderful, low return catch to dismiss Garg. Nicholas Pooran joined Tripathi in the middle and the duo continued the momentum.
They shared a 76-run partnership in seven overs, hitting boundaries in every over before Riley bowled full to Pooran and his flick was snapped up in fine fashion by Mayank at deep backward square.
That wicket derailed SRH’s innings as Ramandeep picked up Tripathi and Aiden Markram in the same over. Our bowlers restricted SRH to just 20 runs in the final four overs as they set us a target of 194.
In response, our openers Ro and Ishan began positively. After a sedate couple of overs, Ro began the carnage with a six over long-on off Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The duo then consistently found the boundary ropes, with a couple of hits going over it, which took us to 51/0 in the powerplay.
A quiet couple of overs followed before a 17-run over from the fiery Umran Malik, where he bowled two no-balls, got some rhythm back for us.
However, Rohit, who had looked sublime in his stay in the middle, mistimed his pull shot off Washington Sundar to be caught at mid-wicket. Ishan then fell in the next over to Umran Malik, which brought Dan Sams and Tilak Varma together in the middle.
The duo shared a 20-run stand before Tilak was out caught trying to pull Umran Malik and was beaten by the pace. Sams was also dismissed in the same over.
Tim David walked in and began with two boundaries off T Natarajan. Tristan Stubbs, who walked in at no. 6, faced an unfortunate dismissal as the ball hit Bhuvi’s hands on the follow through by a drive from David and went on to hit the stumps, which caught Stubbs short.
We had lost a cluster of wickets and faced an uphill task, needing 45 in the last three overs. Then came the big 18th over which turned the game around.
Natarajan came on for his final over and Tim David launched into him, hitting four sixes - including two hits that travelled 98m and 114m - to give us hope again.
However, Tim looked to steal a single in the final ball of the over and Natarajan, who had stopped the shot in his follow through, caught him short of his crease.
Bhuvi then dismissed debutant Sanjay Yadav and bowled a maiden 19th over to leave us with 19 to get off the final over.
Ramandeep Singh tried his best to hit but could not time the ball well enough and despite hitting a four and a six, we fell short by just three runs.
Rohit Sharma also felt that we were in the game till Tim’s runout.
“I thought we had it till the second-last over. Unfortunate runout there for Tim because we were very much in the game till then,” he noted at the post-match presentation.
The skipper praised the bowlers for keeping SRH to below 200 when it looked like they would easily surpass that total at one stage.
“The way we pulled things back at the end was very good after an inconsistent start,” he said.
On the changes to the team, Ro admitted that it was imperative to try out new players in certain situations and stated that it could be done in the next game as well.
“We wanted certain guys to bowl under pressure in certain situations of the game. If there is an opportunity to try out new guys, we will definitely look to do that. We want to tick off the boxes and finish on a high note,” signed off Ro.
A thrilling match with several exciting moments saw us just fall short at the end. The close game certainly bodes well for our final game of the season next time.
