In a squad full of young and talented players, it was inevitable that some would grab their opportunity to shine.

Skipper Rohit Sharma, head coach Mahela Jayawardene and the rest of the support staff and players have often spoken about how impressed they have been with the young players’ attitude and the nice balance that they lend the team.

Here are some youngsters who shone through this season.

Tilak Varma

Touted as one of the young talents to watch out for before the season, Tilak certainly lived up to expectations.

He played all 14 games for us and scored 397 runs, the second-highest tally behind Ishan Kishan in the team. It was also the most runs scored by a teenager in a Tata IPL season.

He ended with a strike-rate of 131.02 and the best part was his adaptability to various roles and situations.

Tilak batted at no.3, no.4 and no.5, walking in during a collapse at times and lifting the team with his maturity and shot selection.

Dewald Brevis

A youngster coming in straight from the U19 World Cup with the record for most runs in an edition under his belt, Dewald Brevis certainly displayed his talent to a larger audience during the course of the season.

Mainly playing in the top-order, DB scored 161 runs in the seven matches he played, and generated momentum with his knocks.

Any DB innings in the season was filled with well-timed shots and that lovely arc of the bat, with the highlight being his four sixes in an over against the Punjab Kings.

Kumar Kartikeya Singh

Even Kartikeya would not have imagined how his life would change before the season began. Starting as a support bowler, Kartikeya was drafted into the squad as an injury replacement for Arshad Khan and played his first game against RR.

He picked the wicket of opposing skipper Sanju Samson with the second ball of his Tata IPL career and never looked back after that.

Kartikeya picked five wickets in the four matches he played at a very good economy rate of 7.84 but more impressively, he left rival batters bamboozled with his unpredictability.

Capable of bowling classic left-arm spin, wrist-spin and the flipper, Kartikeya mixed up his variations well and was tough to get away.

Hrithik Shokeen

For a cricketer playing T20s for the first time, Hrithik Shokeen showed no nerves.

Hrithik scored 43 important runs and picked two wickets in five matches this season and was impressive with his knowledge of when to flight the ball and his understanding of line and length.

With the bat, Hrithik batted in three innings and rescued the team in both games against CSK.

He was sent up the order and shared crucial partnerships with Tilak Varma both times to rescue the team from a mini-collapse and on the second occasion, helped take us home in a tricky run-chase.

Our young players excelling in one of the world’s biggest stage bodes well for the future and will help us build a core which will carry the team forward in years to come.
